Lake Trasimeno in 20 seconds

It is the 4th largest lake in Italy after Lakes Garda, Maggiore and Como. It is a true natural paradise for several animal species and the gentle hills in the background are formed by vineyards, sunflower fields, cornfields, and olive groves. Agriculture by the lake is still cultivated with old traditional techniques.

How to reach Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno in Umbria is located in the province of Perugia, and is just 20 kilometers from Perugia in the northern part of Umbria, close to the border with Tuscany.

The lake is far from as overrun by tourists as the aforementioned lakes in Northern Italy, but that does not make it any worse. In July and August there are of course the most tourists at the lake, so I would advise you to go there in April or May when the temperature is already suitable for a dip in the lake.

The towns by Trasimeno

You will find several charming small villages by the lake, all framed by what characterizes several Umbrian villages, namely the Middle Ages.

Castiglione del Lago

Is located on a limestone atop several Etruscan ruins. In the town, among other sights, you can see the Palazzo Ducale, said to be the only small “palace” in Umbria, and the Rocca del Leone, characterized by the triangular tower. The town is on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, which in Italian is called “I Borghi piu belli d’Itaia”.

Citta della Pieve

Here you will find the narrowest alley in Italy. The town is a peaceful and characteristic medieval town that was once inhabited by the Etruscans and the Romans. This is where the artist Pietro Vannucci was born, and here you will find several of his works. In the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi you will find his impressive work “The Adoration of the King”.

Food and wine by the lake

Don’t miss it! The olive oils, Pieve del Vescovo and Colli del Trasimeno, are top class ovlive oils.

The Grechetto wine and the local Vin Santo, which is a dessert wine, don’t get the same attention as their “siblings” not far away in Tuscany, but must absolutely be enjoyed when you are here. The local honey and cheese can also be recommended.
