Lake Maggiore is picturesquely beautiful, and indeed the very greatest attractions, the Borromean Islands, are of absolutely immense beauty.

As well as the lake being split between two countries, the lake also resides in two Italian regions. The eastern side belongs to Lombardy, while the west side belongs to Piedmont.

Lake Maggiore

Although the northernmost tip of this magnificent lake actually lies within Switzerland, it obviously has to be included here as well, since most of it lies on Italian soil.

As well as the lake being split between two countries, the lake also resides in two Italian regions. The eastern side belongs to Lombardy, while the west side belongs to Piedmont.

Lake Maggiore is picturesquely beautiful, and indeed the very greatest attractions, the Borromean Islands, are of absolutely immense beauty.

The Borromean Islands are made up of 5 small islands. Of these 5 islands, Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori are the most visited. And for good reason. Isola Bella is characterized by the beautiful garden of Palazzo Borromeo.

Isola Madre also has a beautiful Palazzo Borromeo, with a stunning botanical garden. On Isola dei Pescatori you can explore the ancient church of the island, Chiesa di San Vittore.

Attractions at Lago Maggiore

Nature has created this stunning area, but it has been even further enhanced by the grand castles and villas that surround the island.

The Massino Visconti castle, or the Rocca Borromea di Angera, to name just two of the castles, are both natural destinations when on holiday at Maggiore.

The aforementioned villas can be found all around the lake. You will find the most famous in the town of Stresa, which contains Villa Ducale. And just as a side note, it is also here from Stresa that you will be sailing out to the Borromean Islands.

Villa Faraggiana offers a mini-zoo in the town of Meina. Villa Rusconi-Clerici in the town of Verbania also offers visitors a world-class view over the azure-blue Lake Maggiore, besides featuring a very beautiful garden in its own right.

You will find the 40,000 square meter botanical garden, Giardino botanico Alpinia, on the slopes of the mountain Mottarone, near the town of Stresa. Here you can experience some of the richest plant life anywhere on the lake, a lake that already is teeming with beautiful flora and fauna.

Lake Maggiore simply has it all. From the pleasant trekking tours, to the peaceful walks in the botanical gardens. Or perhaps simply enjoying the blue waves of the sea on a sun lounger. You will never go wrong with choosing Lake Maggiore.
