Vernazza is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (Borghi più belli d’Italia) and is seen as the most atmospheric and magical town of the Cinque Terre.
In the Cinque Terre, Vernazza is the second town when you arrive from the west. So, when you’ve passed Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza comes right after.
Vernazza is located in Liguria
Holiday in Vernazza
It is easy and convenient to have a car when you are on holiday in Italy, but it is not always an advantage, which I will explain within short.
As in the other Cinque Terre towns, it is not possible to drive down to the center, so you must prepare to walk 1 kilometer. Parcheggio Vernazza is on the road, Strada Provinciale 51, from which you come, either east or west.
During weekends and high season, there can be severe congestion, and a struggle to get a parking space.
The two nearest airports are in Genoa and in Pisa. Both airports are approximately 112 kilometers from Vernazza.
You can also get to Vernazza by ferry. I haven’t tried it myself, but I can imagine it’s a great experience.
Ferries depart from La Spezia, Portovenere, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Monterosso and Levanto.
We have a partnership with Trenitalia that makes it simple and easy for you to buy your train ticket online.
All you have to do is buy the ticket, get on the train and present the ticket with the QR code to the train conductor.
I would advise you to take the train that runs between Pisa and Genoa. It just makes everything easier, not having to think about where to park your car because, as I said, it can be difficult to find a parking space in high season.
It takes 20 minutes to reach Vernazza from La Spezia and 10 minutes from Levanto. During high season, the trains run every 20 minutes, so there is a good chance to reach one on time, and there is also plenty of opportunities to visit all 5 cities in one day.

Vernazza has been awarded the title of one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and you probably think that the other 4 towns of the Cinque Terre should have it too?! Well, I agree with that, but the organization behind Borghi piu belli d’Italia has chosen to award Vernazza the title.
Vernazza has its very own history. It is of course a subjective opinion, but the town is considered the most atmospheric town in the Cinque Terre.
Vernazza was discovered already in the year 1080 and the town already had a high economic level before the Middle Ages, and it can be felt and seen to this day. Here, the architectural buildings have a high value, and they stand out strongly in the picture with the town’s churches, towers, and arcades.
You can still see the remains of the “Castrum” with a castle “Castello Doria” and a cylindrical tower. Castrum dates to the 11th century.
The approximately 800 inhabitants have an enormous duty to keep the town neat, which takes its toll, as many tourists visit the town, and the buildings, which have many years behind them, must be looked after and cared for. Living in one of the most beautiful villages is demanding.
No matter which of the 5 small villages you find yourself in, fish and seafood is what is served the most. Here you will, not surprisingly, be served fish in all shades, squids, and other delicacies from the sea.
Enjoy your meal with wine from the locals called Sciacchetrá. Their white wine goes perfectly with seafood.
My favorite part of Cinque Terre is Vernazza. The town is entirely centered around the harbor, which is very, very small, but nonetheless incredibly beautiful.
From the square you have a spectacular view of the sea and the small charming 2-storey Gothic church, Santa Margherita.
The town is dominated by the Doria castle, which in the past was built to defend against attacks from the sea.
Luckily there is no reason to defend the town from attacks nowadays, and Vernazza is more beautiful than ever.
Cinque Terre is the name of the beautiful coast that stretches from alongside the Italian Riviera di Levante. The coast is littered with cliffs that strike a stark contrast to the waves of the mediterranean that come crashing into them.
The place is named from the 5 small towns that have been squeezed into and between the cliffs. They stretch from Monterosso to Riomaggiore.
