Paestum has three large, well-preserved Greek temples, all large and beautiful monuments, built to protect the city and honor the gods who were supposed to protect their community. The three temples are the largest and most well-preserved from the Magna-Graecia period.
The Neptune temple is the largest, built in 460 BC. When you see pictures from this area, they will often be pictures of Neptune. It is an impressive building and world-class architecture.
The temple of Hera, called the Basilica, is the oldest of the temples, built in 540 BC.
The Ceres temple was built in 500 BC. Ceres is the smallest of the three temples.
Close to the ruins to the east, you will find Paestum’s archaeological museum, where all finds such as tomb paintings and grave treasures are exhibited. You must also see the paintings on the Tomb of the Diver, Tomba del Tuffatore, which are the only Greek wall paintings left from that period.
