Drinks and Preben Elkjær

Teatro Romano offers visitors an amazing view out over the city, where you can follow the clear waters of the Adige river that runs through the whole city.

Preben Elkjær?! He is still remembered here as he remains one of the city’s heroes, dating back to 1985 when Hellas Verona won the club’s only championship to date.

Enjoy a cold drink, preferably water, outside one of the many cafés at the Stadio Bentegodi, where there are still many pictures of Mr Elkjær Larsen. Nostalgia and joy leap out of the locals when you tell them you come from Denmark.

Piazza Erbe in Verona

The entrance to Piazza Bra, the square itself and also the Arena are sure to give you a great impression. But there are more impressions in store for you, as once you leave the place you will cross towards Casa Giulietta that is said to have inspired Shakespeare himself. It is probably because the city is steeped in the love story of Romeo and Juliet that Verona is called the city of love.

Along the way we pass a multitude of shops selling everything you need to prove you have been to Verona, which is why it will take you quite a few hours to get from Piazza Bra and over to Casa Giulietta, even though the walk itself is not really that far.

The balcony where Julie stood can be found in a small courtyard, but do note that the alleyway leading into it is very crowded. Because you have to understand that Verona, with all its sights and glories, is a very popular destination, and Juliette’s balcony is definitely a draw for many tourists. So to make a long story short, there are really, really many people crammed into a very little space here.

Casa Giulietta in Verona

Casa Giulietta is located at Via Cappello 23. Admission costs between 5 and 10 euros.

You can read more about both Casa Giulietta and Piazza Erbe above. I would also like to let you know that there is a big market in Piazza Erbe, where you can buy lots of different fruits, and of course a lot of different kinds of souvenirs.

I am not 100% sure if the market is open every day. From our own experience from visiting Verona, we visited once during a Friday, and once on a Tuesday. Both days had the market open and bustling, so it is possible that the market is open every day.

The giant amphitheater is of course open to visitors, where you have the opportunity to see the amphitheater that hosts the world’s largest outdoor opera every summer.

The Arena is one of the largest amphitheaters in Italy, second only to the Colosseum in Rome and the Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Making the Arena arguably the biggest landmark of the city. Just like the Colosseo, the amphitheater was used for several gladiator fights with exotic animals. At that period in time the venue could hold up to 30,000 people.

Opera and UNESCO

As mentioned earlier, these days the opera season is active during the summer, but there are also several other concerts and events held in the arena as well.

The historic center of the city, which we are just moving around right now inside Piazza Bra, has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2000.

When you enter Piazza Bra you will see the great medieval gate, first written about in 1257, and which connected Piazza Bra with the suburbs of Verona.
