Trentino-South Tyrol in 20 seconds

The region of Trentino-Alto Adige comprises two sharply disconnected provinces, that both enjoy a special type of self governance, both as a region, and individually as provinces. Alto Adige has kept its Austrian culture and the German language, whereas Trentino primarily consists of Italian speaking citizens.

There are great conditions for skiers to be had in the Italian Dolomites, and the further up we reach into Alto Adige the more the alps begin to dominate the landscape. Canazei lies at the feet of some of the most awe inspiring mountain tops, and is a fantastic area where you can really explore the Dolomites.

During summer there are lifts ferrying people up to the best viewpoints, while in the winter people are ferried up to then fly back down on skis, snowboards or something else entirely. Bolzano is a living example of the meeting of Italian and German cultures. The older city has a gathering point around Piazza Walther and the shop arcades in Via dei Portici.

The large southern city of Trento is surrounded by great beauty. The heavenly central area of the city is formed around Piazza Duomo, which is where you also find the Cattedrale di San Vigilio.

Whether in summer or winter, Trentino Alto-Adige is something special.

The Dolomites

The Italian mountain range is naturally so pretty that it has become part of UNESCO’s world heritage. The flora and fauna of the Dolomites are complemented by azure blue lakes and mountain ranges that reach more than 3,000 meters in the air.

The Dolomites are not only large due to the 192,000 hectares of north Italian landscape, but also because the area reaches into the sky. Here you’ll find an impressive 18 peaks that extend more than 3,000 meters upwards above sea level.

The area feels as though it was created for activities such as hiking and mountain biking, as well as various skisport activities. And for an example, locations such as the fashionable and exclusive Cortina D’Ampezzo stand out.

Skiing holiday in Canazei

Here it’s all about the cold sports activities. Canazei is synonymous with skiing in the wonderful surroundings of the Dolomites. We are among the largest mountain peaks in this lovely mountain range.

Here you’ll find Sassuolungo standing 3,100 meters tall, and Marmolada that reaches up towards the sky in excess of 3,300 meters. There’s also the smaller mountain range, Gruppo del Sella, which at its highest point is 3100 meters above sea level.

Lago di Braies

AN ALPINE LAKE SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS

Lago di Braies, or Pragser Wildsee if we use the German name, is an alpine lake which is completely surrounded by mountains. The lake is completely blank, and the headline does not do it justice. You can see yourself reflected in the lake, that’s how shiny and beautiful it is.

The lake is the largest natural lake in the Dolomites, and turns emerald in color during the summer, while it is white when covered in snow and ice during the winter months. Lago Braies is therefore well worth a visit all year round. And when spring arrives we feel invited to do everything from hiking to mountain climbing. And once the first snow hits the area we can of course also strap on our skis and take to the slopes.

The lake really shines in the summer when all you can hear is the gentle ripple of the water!

Vipiteno

The city of Vipiteno is Italian and one of the most beautiful villages in the country. Yet you will overhear more German phrases than Italian here. It is nothing out of the ordinary to the citizens, but it feels a bit special when you consider that you are visiting Italy.

But the people you meet are most lovely and kind. Whether it be the woman at the local coffee shop, the young lady opening her textile store, or even the garbage man who is in the progress of emptying today’s trash from a restaurant, you will be greeted every time.

When all is said and done, it is fantastic that you get such a greeting in both German and Italian, it just adds to the experience.

The city

There’s no doubt that you can not possibly miss the city’s landmark, the Torre del Dodici when you are in town. The tower has been here since 1469 and was completed in 1473 with the tower’s sundial and clock. Back then the tower was located next to the city gate where it functioned as part of the city wall. The tower looks the way it does today because of the great fire in 1868.

You will find charm all around the city, which is best expressed with the various shapes of the alpine city that is heavily inspired by the beautiful surroundings.

The city is ready to invite you on a stroll through the cobbled streets that are surrounded by multi-colored shops, and which blend well with the many cafés and restaurants.

For those of you that love culture, you will also get the opportunity to see beautiful Gothic churches and medieval castles, and you can not visit Vipiteno without seeing the impressive Castel Tasso.

Canale di Tenno in Trentino-Alto Adige

Canale di Tenno

This town is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Although Canale di Tenno is located a full 10 kilometers north of the lake, it is no less charmingly beautiful. The town stands in beautiful contrast with Lago di Tenno, which you’ll find a short distance from the town. Here you’ll find the tranquility of a small lake, a small medieval town that is in stark contrast to the more vibrant towns on Lake Garda.

The village

Surely there is not a more atmospheric village than Borgo Medievale di Canale, as the town is known as. The beautiful medieval center sits 600 meters above the sea level, and from up there you get breathtaking views out across the valley.

The Italians are really great at keeping their old towns up to date. The same is true here of course, and the medieval materials and designs hold up just as well as they should and always have done.
