Marche in 20 seconds

There is no shortage of lovely cities, villages and areas that make you fall in love with this place. The most famous city is Urbino, which is one of the few mountain cities in Italy that has not been surrounded by newer and more modern suburbs.

Ascoli Piceno is a small university city that has a world-class city center, with Piazza del Popolo as the central hub for the inhabitants of the city. And this city center is of course listed as one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

About Marche

Marche is not as well known as other areas in Italy when it comes to tourism, especially when we consider the habits of European tourists living up north. But that is not a negative, as it means the area is not overcrowded with tourists during the peak season. And thank goodness for that!

Lovely areas and nature

The region of Marche is among the very best in Italy when it comes to showcasing nature in a most beautiful manner.

Whether you are exploring the cave system of Grotte di Frasassi, or enjoying the sun on one of the many lovely beaches of Portonovo, Marche will guarantee you beautiful experiences wherever you go.

And the cities themselves are also a pure pleasure to experience and enjoy. Urbino is a beautiful medieval city with crooked streets and angles, and behind the large city walls Montecosaro is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

Numana

When it comes to beaches, Numana is a true paradise that offers an amazing beach holiday that is virtually unique and perfect in every way.

The two beaches of Numana Basse and Mercelli are among the most visited beaches in the area.

Portonovo

You can already begin thinking about your summer holiday as early as January when you plan on visiting Italy. We are currently discussing the topic of Marche, and especially Portonovo which is a famous tourist destination that is closely situated next to the large city of Ancona.

During the summer months nearly half a million tourists explore the area, and for good reason. Portonovo is part of the wonderful Parco del Conero, which with its more than 6,000 hectares takes up quite a bit of space in the region of Marche, south of Ancona.

Portonovo is located peacefully facing towards the bay overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Monte Conero is steep and blocks all the wind that would otherwise sweep down onto the bathing tourists, making the area even more pleasant to visit.

Grotte di Frasassi in Marche

The impressive Frasassi cave is found in the western part of Marche.

Therefore the attraction is within easy reach from southern Tuscany or Umbria, if that’s where you’re enjoying your holiday.

A huge cave system

Frassasi is located 60 kilometers west of the port city of Ancona, 75 kilometers south of Urbino, 85 kilometers from Perugia (Do note that there are no 4-lane highways leading out to the site), and 216 kilometers from Florence.

From the latter city the time to drive takes just a little over 3 hours, and as previously written the roads to Frasassi are small and narrow.

Grotte di Frasassi is a huge complex of caves measuring up to 180 by 120 meters inside, and the cave is almost 200 meters high. This means that the cave could actually contain the Cathedral of Milan.

Remember to book from home!

You can visit Frasassi all year round. Here you can explore the glass crystals changing into all sorts of different colors. There is also a carefully planned tourist route for visitors.

There’s an option for a two-hour long stay down there, for those older than 12 years, where you can actually venture inside the cave itself.

The two-hour tour is called Speleo-Avventura and requires booking in advance. So book from home if you plan to visit.

Urbino

Urbino is a beautiful medieval town that has small and crooked streets in every direction.  This wonderful center square is of course dominated by the Palazzo Ducale, but the city’s Duomo is also worth a visit.

Further endearing is the fact that the city’s many young students from the city’s university live a splendid life right here in the middle of the medieval center.

Urbino would undoubtedly not be so famous without the Palazzo Ducale, built by Federico da Montefeltro. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche is housed in the huge renaissance building.

Palazzo Ducale in Urbino

Palazzo Ducale offers some of the most beautiful and also most interesting architecture of the Italian renaissance. Among others, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche is located in Palazzo Ducale.

The palace, or city if you will, is enormous and makes for an impressive sight when standing on the ridge and you are looking towards the building that rises majestically above Urbino.

You will undoubtedly be impressed, though we feel that the word is too small to convey the full meaning of the experience.

Basilica in Loreto in Marche

Loreto

Loreto is situated straight south from the capital of Ancona, where it is accessible from within just 30 minutes of driving.

The water is also right around the corner, almost, with just 6 kilometers of road before you reach the Adriatic Sea.

Basilica della Santa Casa

Without a doubt, the largest attraction in Loreto is the Basilica della Santa Casa. You won’t be able to miss it when exploring this area, and neither should you, for it is an amazing building worth seeing.

While you explore the Piazza della Madonna in the city, the beautiful facade looms over you, inviting you and other eager tourists and inhabitants to come explore.

The church is close to being one of the most popular destinations for catholic pilgrims. And in fact the church is one of the most important monuments for pilgrims. It was built in the gothic style during the renaissance.

Ascoli Piceno

Even though Ascoli Piceno is just the fourth largest town in the region of Marche, we deem it to be the most pretty of them all – sharing first place together with Urbino.

Ascoli is situated in a breathtakingly beautiful area in the southern part of Marche, very close to the border with Abruzzo.

“Ascoli Piceno is one of the most beautiful small towns in all of Italy, and I don’t see any other like it”, Guido Piovene wrote in his book “Travel to Italy” in 1957.
