Lazio in 20 seconds

A large part of the landscape surrounding Lazio was created when four volcanoes erupted and spread their lava throughout the area. Rome is the dominant city in the region, and provides a clear distinction between the forest and mountains to the north, and the Pontine marshes to the south.

So even though Rome is an enormous city that beautifully stretches far and wide, there is still plenty of breathtaking nature available offering lovely cozy lakes and long world-class beaches.

Monte Cassino Abbey

We will start our story about Lazio with Monte Cassino, also known as the Monte Cassino Abbey, which is the gigantic abbey you can see when driving on the E45 highway between Rome and Naples, and which you definitely should visit if you are around these parts.

The story goes that the Monte Cassino Abbey originally was an old temple inhabited by heathens, but in the year 529 St. Benedict and the monks who followed him from Subiaco wished to be housed there. Therefore he drove out the heathens who tried defending the temple, and St. Benedict then built the Monte Cassino Abbey.

Throughout the centuries the abbey has been through many events, from destruction to new and grand renovations. In the year 577 the abbey was destroyed by the Lombards, and in 887 the place was again trashed by the Saracens. It suffered further destruction during a massive earthquake in 1347, and was also damaged later on in World War II.

World War II

During the second world war a huge battle took place there, from January to May of 1944, where it is estimated that upwards of 70,000 people lost their lives. There were fierce clashes between the allies and their opponents, in an effort to break through the Gustav line south of Rome. There is a Polish war cemetery at Monte Cassino, one of 5 war cemeteries located near the town of Cassino. After the war the restoration of Montecassino became an enormous task which began in 1948 and was completed in 1956.

Museum with paintings and manuscripts

The monastery may be beautiful in its own right, but it is the museum that really drives home the feeling of grandeur. Here you can see the beautiful paintings, gorgeous manuscripts and old dusty books. The books tell you the story from the beginning to the present day, and is the reason why Monte Cassino is the “light of Western civilization”.

Tivoli in Lazio

You find the city of Tivoli in the direction towards Abruzzo, east of Rome, roughly 30 kilometers from the city center. The place is a climatic paradise, nestled on the hills at Tiburtini and along the river Aniene.

You can also explore Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana in Tivoli, both of which are part of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

The wonderful Villa d’Este made it onto UNESCO’s list in 2001, and is part of a fascinating area that includes waterfalls, canyons and caves. The masterwork of renaissance art was ordered in the 16th century, and is one of the most visited places in Italy today.

Subiaco

Bluntly put, Lazio is almost only known for the magnificent capital city of Rome, which is also known as the eternal city.

But in the easternmost part of Lazio you will find an incredibly fantastic nature, with tiny and mountainous villages sprinkled throughout. One of these villages is the beautiful Subiaco, which has also been honored by being named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

There are classic churches, as we know them from our time in Italy, and great and beautiful monasteries like Santa Scolastica and San Benedetto. And mixed in with all these atmospheres we find a world class medieval atmosphere in Subiaco. The city is roughly one hour’s drive away from the center of Rome.

Castel Gandolfo

This city is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The area

Of course you should stroll around town, where you will be subjected to a view of the lake which is incredible. The lake is completely blue, and while many times this is just an exaggeration told by tourist offices, in this case it is actually true. The Albano lake is truly blue, and lies in deep contrast to the green trees surrounding the lake.

The city

Castel Gandolfo is one of the many Castelli Romani villages that represent the history and typical landscape of the area. The town’s location and center have made it easy for the town to become one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The fame has come about because the Pope’s summer residence was located here, and you will see large and beautiful villas along the lake, as well as around the whole area of Lake Albano in general. You’ll find art in many places, but we recommend the papal church of San Tommaso da Villanova. It was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and built in 1658 according to Pope VII’s will.

Ponza

Ponza is an island in the Lazio region.
