Trieste in 20 seconds

Trieste is a gigantic city near the Gulf of Trieste, with the undulating blue waves of the Adriatic crashing into the harbor. The first time you see this in all its might, is when you have taken the exit from the A4 highway, and are winding your way down the small roads. Trieste steals the show in this beautiful bay.

Sights in Trieste

Trieste can boast of being home to the largest Piazza in Italy, and that is quite an achievement. Piazza Unita d’Italia offers up more than 12,000 square meters, making it a huge square that begins close to the sea and moves deep into the city center.

You will find amazing eateries and cafes in Trieste, but of course also amazing buildings, like the Palazzo del Comune, Palazzo Modello, and the beautiful fountain, Fontana dei Quattro Continenti (the 4 Continents).

Fontana dei Quattro Continenti

This fountain was created by the famous sculptor Giovanni Battista Mazzoleni, way back in the mid 1700’s. The 4 continents represent the continents that were known at that time. Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The Fontana dei Quattro Continenti is truly a unique masterpiece.

Piazza Unita d’Italia can and should not be missed, but Trieste has a wealth of other pleasant squares as well. The most important of these is Piazza della Borsa, which has served as the economic powerhouse in the city for hundreds of years.

Castello di Miramare

If you seek tranquility, then Castello del Miramare is a great option. Take a trip to the Castle that lies just a few kilometers away from the city itself. The castle is ancient and has a beautiful and large garden attached, where you can just feel and enjoy the quiet peace.

The Adriatic Sea and Botanical Garden

Castello di Miramare is located just 9 kilometers from the center of Trieste. And to reach it you can drive on the beautiful Viale Miramare that follows the coast, or you can take bus number 6 destined for Grignano.

If you are driving a car then we recommend that you park along the coast, before walking the last distance to the castle itself. For you will find it is very difficult to get a parking spot close by, especially during the busy season, and it can also be slightly tricky to actually reach it by car to begin with.

Massimiliano d’Asburgo-Lorena built the castle for him and his wife around the 1860’s, and the furniture you see inside the castle are the original ones, preserved from that time. Here visitors will experience a huge aristocratic residence that features enormous luxury. Luxury that is fantastically well preserved as only the Italians can!

One of the most impressive things about the museum is the old hammered piano that you will find inside the music room.
