Friuli-Venezia Giulia in 20 seconds
The capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is Trieste, which ranks as the 15th largest city in Italy with its more than 200,000 inhabitants. You will find this hidden gem of a city in the bottom right corner of the region, where it is neighboring the beautiful Golfo di Trieste.
Here you will find endless contrasts, with the blue waves from the Adriatic Sea in the south, to the enormous alps of Carniche and Giulie, that are bordering Austria and Slovenia.
For those of us who live in northern Europe the smaller cities of Friuli might seem well hidden away. The two largest cities, Trieste and Udine tend to dominate the region when it comes to citylife.

Holiday in Friuli-Venezia Giulia
The star of Friuli is Palmanova. It really is! Take a look at aerial photos of the city, and you can see for yourself. The city is located in the southeastern part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where it is close by the A23 highway near Udine-Tarvisio, and the A4 highway between Torino and Trieste. Palmanova is surrounded by three sets of city walls. The first wall was constructed in the years between 1593 and 1620, and was further improved upon with the addition of a moat. More than 40 years later, in 1665, they began working on the second wall past the moat, which they finished in 1683. On this wall they paid extra attention to the gates since they were the weak points.
Finally the third ring was built from 1806-1809, and has stood there ever since. The 9 edges of the walls are clearly distinguishable, and provide a beautiful view when seen from above.
The history of the city includes a long war in the 16th century that was finished between Austria and Venice, and also includes a long list of historic buildings in the city. Of these we can mention Palazzo del Provvedere Generale, a building from 1598, that serves a town hall today. Here you can also explore the beautiful and ancient building from the year 900, Loggia della Gran Guardia, Santo Monte di Pietà, Palazzo del Governatore dell’Armi, and many many others.
Duomo di Palmanova and Chiese del Santissimo are the best examples of venetian architecture. The church was finished in 1636 and can be found on Piazza Grande.

The region has recently made it onto the world map when it comes to wine production. Up here they produce an exquisite white wine.
And the Friuli wine is indeed thoroughly enjoyed around these parts. For as they say around these parts, “A good glass of wine should be enjoyed with good company.”
You can experience the arches of the Porticato di San Giovanni in Piazza della Libertá near the city center. Here you will find the Loggia del Lionello, which is built with pink stone in the typical Venetian style.
