Calabria in 20 seconds

The toe of the Italian boot offers an impressive and eventful journey in every positive way. The nature is completely fantastic, like all places in Italy, and the region has plenty of impressive natural parks in the southern parts of Calabria.

The experience is also cheap in the mountainous region of Calabria, and if you are traveling by car it is free to drive on the highway from Salento and all the way down to Reggio di Calabria.

About Calabria

The beaches are what really sets the tone in Calabria. The entire area is brimming with long and fantastic sandy beaches, snaking their way alongside the coast next to the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas.

Contrary to the beaches further north in Italy, you won’t find masses of tourists crowding the landscape here. Instead the area offers small and cozy villages, especially those near the Tyrrhenian coastline, and the locals are just beginning to realize what tourism can mean for them and the communities there.

National Parks

There are three large national parks dominating the beautiful and mountainous nature of Calabria. Parco Nazionale dell’Aspromonte lies all the way down near the city of Reggio Di Calabria. Then there is Parco Nazaionale della Sila, which is the third youngest national park in Italy. And finally we have Parco Nazionale del Pollino. Pollino is the largest national park in Italy, covering an area of more than 190,000 hectares. The park is so large that the beauty has to be shared between the regions of Calabria and Basilicata.

VACATION IN STILO

Stilo is located in a pristine position at the feet of Monte Consolino, which is part of the mountain range Serre Calabresi.

The city is dominated by the major attraction of Cattolica di Stilo, with its characteristic 5 domes, and the most beautiful view of the town and its olive groves. The church is created in the Byzantine architectural style, and people with an interest from both near and far flock to the city faster than can be counted. The church is located a few kilometers above the city itself.

For many years Cattolica di Stilo has been a candidate for inclusion of UNESCOs world heritage site, but has not yet managed that achievement. They are however still trying, and are not showing signs of giving up. And it most certainly deserves to be included!

There have been 18 churches sprawled throughout the city since time immemorial, but the region is prone to earthquakes, and has thus lost some of the churches due to this. Luckily there are still plenty of churches left standing, among those The Duomo, Abbazia di San Giovanni Therestis, as well as the enormous Chiesa di San Domenico, just to mention the most prominent of them.

Tropea

The crystal clear and blue water at Tropea creates a true paradise for divers, and they come from all over the world during the summer. If you would like to experience more than just sunbathing, there is plenty of space available on the long and accommodating coastline that still appears completely unspoiled.

The harbor is the lively center of the city. The small and cozy streets and alleys offering a beautiful view over the ocean can easily be exchanged for another impressive vista, if so desired.

During the summer cars are not allowed to drive in the center of Tropea, which means you have to park at the large car park south of the city.

Tropea is one of the most gorgeous villages in all of Italy.
